I had had a picture of the Basic Enigma banner flag they used to use at shows before they reformed under SpineShank and Jonny was going to send me some mp3 demos of Basic Enigma from a minidisc copy he still had, but life started happening and we lost contact; However, I got a couple interviews from Tim Mankowski from Jonny's later project Silent Civilian about Basic Enigma and from Jonny, and another from Rob about his pre-Spineshank band called "Swinside Circle". I was operating a "fansite" at the time 20 some odd years ago and fortunately most of the website text content appears to be archived on the wayback machine, unfortunately it appears wayback machine did not archive the image of the Basic Enigma logo flag they were using. Also side note, Jonny did a lot of vocal work post-Spineshank for a band called "Dualized"; there are uploads on youtube if you can find them they're there. I doubt youtube will allow me to post a link to the copy of my fansite that had all this info without deleting this entire comment, so I'll copy paste the text from the biography page: Basic Enigma Direct From Jonny: Basic Enigma was started by tommy and marlo somewhere around '89-'90. Tommy called me up quickly to join the band as a guitarist and we had a singer by the name of Art Garcia and a bass player by the name of Jules Granillo. We were all in high school at the time, me being a freshman and Tommy, Art, and Marlo being sophmores. I forget if Jules even went to school. The band was heavily influenced by Pantera, Death Angel, Faith No More, and Metallica etc.... We played a lot of backyard party's and did a lot of pay to play shows. We sucked, but we had fun. Eventually, I parted ways with them due to personal differences with the singer at the time(we didnt get along at all) and was replaced by another guy named John.... oh I forget his last name. Well, eventually Tommy and Marlo convinced me to come back to the band as a bass player since Jules had quit during my absence. Playing bass was not what I wanted to be doing, but hey, I was in a band. After a short time back in the band, John quit, and we got rid of Art. We were looking for a new guitar player and came across a guy named Dan Noonan who is now in Depswa. That lasted about a month or two and then we found Tim Mankowski. A Coworker of Tommy's. Well he fit the bill for a while but attitudes clashed and he was traded in for his friend and sometimes tech, Mike Sarkisyan. We had a group of guys that seemed to work well now, and by this time, I was singing and playing bass because singers were hard to come by back then. Well at least decent ones. The sound was evolving into more of a Sepultura meets Biohazard thing at that point. We played like that for a while as Basic Enigma and after a while disbanded for 6 months just to re-emerge as The 1st line up as Spineshank. 8 months into the bands conception we made some changes. Marlo was kicked out due to lack of commitment, and rather than get a replacement, The other guys wanted to remain a 4 piece with only one guitar. We hired Mikes friend Ara to play bass so that I would just be a frontman and Ara, as nice and awsome of a guy he was, couldn't handle being in the band. He is still today a very good friend of the band's as well as Marlo, Art , Jules, Dan, and Tim. We were playing a lot of partys at that time with a band called Swinside Circle. Rob was the singer and Bass Player in that band and they were of the same style. Well Rob was filling in for us till we could find a new bass player and at some point, Swinside broke up and we got Rob on fulltime about 2 months before we got signed. He turned out to be the missing link and had a voice from hell. We signed with Roadrunner in Oct. of 97 and the rest is history. I hope the other guys will share their story as well, and am sorry if I missed anything, but that is pretty much how it all went down. I'm sure it will be interesting to take all recolection of Basic Enigma into Spineshank from each member and put it all together for a cool story. Best Regards, Jonny Santos Swinside Circle Direct From Rob: Swinside Circle was formed in the summer of '93 by Me on bass/vocals, Mike Hinojos on guitar and Armando (Mondo) Urias on drums, both good friends of mine from High School. It was the three of us jamming and trying to write songs in a garage for most of that year until someone asked us to play a backyard party. We then had to get a name and songs for the party. We got everything together but it sucked none the less. Mondo stayed with us for 2 parties and then quit. At his last party with us was where we played with Basic Enigma. We played and hung out, we got along well. We found Mondo's replacement Vic Salcido, through the Recycler. We tried him out and he was an amazing drummer so he stayed and helped add more structure to the songs we already had. After that both bands did a couple of shows together. We were finally able to get some money to make a 5 song demo. Listening to it now, I can tell that we were very influenced by Sepultura and Slayer. We started playing clubs around this time but nothing too amazing was happening. Little did I know what was in store for me. One day I ran into Tommy and we started talking about what we'ld been up to. He told me about the new band he was in called Spineshank, with former Basic Enigma members. We exchanged demos and when I heard the Spineshank demo I thought it was killer. From there we started hanging out, drinking at each others houses. Eventually Spineshank needed someone to fill in on bass. Tommy called me up and I played a few shows and well to make a longer story short, I quit Swinside Circle that night and next morning Tommy asked me to join Spineshank... you know the rest... -Rob Garcia 5/23/05 Basic Enigma Direct From Tim Mankowski of Silent Civilian: My time with Basic Enigma went down like this ......I hooked up with Jonny and Tom in 1992/1993. I was 15 or 16 years old. I remember both of them coming over to my house to "audition" me. I was playing Pantera riffs for them while I was warming up and they were for some reason really impressed that I could play all that stuff so I got the gig right then and there. We were all about bands like Sepultura, Pantera, Biohazard, Slayer, Metallica, etc. It was Me, Jonny, Tom, Marlo and Art (former vocalist). Art didn't really sound right at any of our practices and back then Jonny used to background sing and play bass. Jonny would get better and better every practice. I remember talking with Marlo and Tom at our rehearsal studio and saying "Jonny should sing, he blows Art away". All of us were in agreement to make Jonny our singer and part ways with Art. That pretty much started Jonny's long career as a vocalist. We played lots of backyard parties, and shows in Hollywood. I recorded two demos with the band and they are interesting to hear nowadays. They sound like alot of our influences. Our first demo was entitled "Drunk with Power". Tom came up with that title. The second demo was untitled. I was with the band for a few years and then decided it was time for me to do something diffent so I left the band. Before I left, I had a friend named Mike/Randy/Soren Sarkisyan who I introduced to the guys. I first met him in the Recycler (local LA paper) and we had similar interests in music. We used to hang out all the time, go to shows together, drink, bbq, play guitar, we were basically good friends back then. I remember playing the Basic Enigma demos for him and he loved the music. He was a Basic Enigma fan, and even would tech for me at a couple of shows before I left the band. I took him out to lunch in Pasadena, explained I was leaving Basic Enigma, and offered my spot in the band to him. I introduced him to Jonny and Tom and he took my place in Basic Enigma. I have sent you a picture of the original Basic Enigma banner that I had made at that time, and still have it. This banner was at all of our shows and was our original logo. We would take this banner with us to Hollywood when we would pass out flyers and try to promote the band. We were basically kids that had a serious passion for metal music, and I am proud that I was a part of it. Edit/Comment: According to Mike Sarkisyan, the second demo referred to above was titled "Bleachbomb"

Prong was the only other band besides Biohazard that got massive amounts of weekly exposure on MTV / Headbangers Ball during the peak metal / thrash years (90-93). Lost and Found, Beg to Differ, Steady Decline, For Dear Life, and Unconditional were all used in promo spots. If the band wasn't paid someone def was. As much as Riki Rachtman pushed Biohazard on a weekly basis, he also repped Prong by continuously name checking them during interviews and always wearing their merch on MTV. It's mind-blowing that Riki Rachtman gets any shit by bands or fans. He is the reason so many heavy and grunge bands hit mainstream before Beavis and Butthead played their vids. No radio in the states existed for this music besides 89.5 WSOU (NJ). He also risked his career by refusing to play Tyketto, Trouble Tribe and Tuff type metal bands anymore for COC, Leeway, Life of Agony, Ministry, etc. Please follow through and interview Riki Rachtman and MTV about this era to set the record straight. Almost forgot. Prong opening for Ozzy in NYC during his small No More Tears theater tour. Destroyed Ozzy. I'll never forget the sound Prong had in that room. Or how embarrassed we were for Zack Wylde (who we loved) doing endless solos with teased hair. You knew right then the guard was changing and these news kids are going to take over.

Then I met Tommy during the Cleansing Tour in Columbus, Ohio. Well, I think Tommy signed the photo on behalf of the other two. Anyway, good show, Drew. As always.

@@jma6893 That doesn't surprise me. I am not a big fan either to be honest, other than some early stuff. Once the 90's hit and a friend of mine gave me a cassette with Streetcleaner on one side and EYEHATEGOD's In the Name of Suffering on the other I didn't pay attention to NYHC anymore. The aforementioned bands spoke to the brooding nihilist in me I guess:) At any rate Drew has really had some great people on from outside the NY scene so I thought I would at least throw Justin's name out there.
